Warrnambool and Port Fairy

I always knew of the large number of shipwrecks that occurred along Victoria’s coastline, particularly in the 18th and 19th centuries. Today I saw why! We travelled to see Port Fairy which was a bit smaller than I expected. I found the mix of grotty old houses, stock standard 70s and 80s houses and modern, new holiday homes a bit incongruous but it was good to have a look around.
Port Fairy 2011-05-14 017In Port Fairy we saw a replica sailing vessel, faithfully made using 17th century techniques. It is berthed in Port Fairy for a 12 month period. Visitors are admitted for a donation to raise money for sails and other needed equipment before the boat builder undertakes a world wide voyage in 2012. The weather was too out of sorts for the boat to be open today, but it was wonderful to have a good look from the outside. It reminded me of the vessel in the movie ‘The Voyage of the Dawn Treader’ basPort Fairy 2011-05-14 014ed on the book written by C.S. Lewis.
I keep sounding very unadventurous in my posts, but the thought of being on that world wide voyage just makes me shudder!!

In Port Fairy we came across a beach
known as ‘Pea Soup’.
It needs no more explanation, just take a look
at some of the photos!

Unfortunately the photos don’t capture the sound and ‘squalliness’ of the waves…
Later in the day even more ferocious seas were in Warrnambool itself.
Take a look at these!Warrnambool 2011-05-14 013

Imagine enduring a long sea journey, getting so close to shore and then encountering waves like these!
Our last stop before heading home was to Thunder Bay. It was a beautiful spot!
