Today we left Esperance after what felt like a massive foodshop and getting onto new technology with the purchase of a Telstra internet dongle. It’s funny, I’ve often felt behind the times in regard to purchasing technology but at the moment we have two laptops with wireless internet access, a mobile phone with the same and four ipods. I’m feeling right up there!
The closest town I could compare Esperance to in terms of feel is Narrogin. It didn’t feel as big as Albany but certainly a lot bigger than many of the towns we have been to. I would have loved to spend some more time exploring Esperance. Even though we have six months to travel – and I am by no means complaining here – but we feel as though we need to go pretty quickly through WA, otherwise we are quickly going to run out of time.
We passed through the town of Salmon Gums, where there are a large number of gum trees with salmon pink trunks. Very appropriately named. The next biggish town we went through was Norseman. I didn’t realise how big it would be! The town centrepiece is a roundabout which has a number of corrugated iron camel sculptures celebrating the town’s history of having camel teams transporting goods demanded by the gold prospectors of the 19th century. Tonight we are staying at a rest area that is 16km east of Norseman. This is our first night of really camping, as the rest area is basically a bit of land with dirt tracks ready to house travellers. There are two other vans here tonight – one a pair of Grey Nomads in their caravan and another where an older lady is travelling with her dog and Kombi van and loud generator!
